Magic can't save ‘Harry Potter' star Rupert Grint from a $2.3 million tax bill
Rupert Grint’s £1.8 million Tax Battle #
Rupert Grint, known for his role as Ron Weasley in the “Harry Potter” film series, faces a £1.8 million tax bill following a legal dispute with British tax authorities. In 2019, Grint was ordered to pay after an investigation of his tax return from seven years prior. The authorities found he had incorrectly classified £4.5 million in residuals from the films as a capital asset rather than income, which is taxed at a higher rate.
Despite appealing the decision, a tribunal judge ruled against Grint, emphasizing that the money “derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint” and should be “taxable as income.” Grint accumulated significant earnings from his role in all eight “Harry Potter” films, estimated at around £24 million. This ruling follows another court loss for Grint in 2019, when he unsuccessfully contested a £1 million tax refund.
