Thousands of people have been evacuated in southeast China after heavy rains caused floods and landslides. Over 35,000 people were evacuated by Saturday, with more than 10,000 people evacuated in the hardest-hit city of Meizhou. Seventeen waterways in the major Han River basin experienced flooding above the alert level. Guangdong province, home to 127 million people, is prone to annual flooding but has seen more intense rainstorms and severe floods in recent years. The climate crisis is believed to be amplifying extreme weather events. The province of Fujian also issued a flood alert due to heavy rainfall. China has been dealing with extreme weather conditions, including heavy rains in the south and severe drought and record temperatures in the north.
